Cape Coral
Cape Coral is the 2nd largest city in Florida in respects to square miles. Cape Coral spans 115 square miles, with over 9 square miles of water alone! With such a large land mass it is no wonder the city is broken into four quadrants, SE, SW, NE, and NW, with the East-West Divider being Santa Barbara BLVD, and the North-South divider being Hancock Bridge Parkway.
Fort Myers borders Cape Coral to the east, with access to Cape Coral coming from the Cape Coral Bridge at the southern end of the city and the Midpoint Bridge lying in the middle of Cape Coral. Before either bridge was built, residents would have to drive all the way up Del Prado more than 20 miles to the Edison Bridge, which is still in operation today.
As of the 2000 census 102,000 people inhabited the city, with a median age of 42.
Cape Coral is a relatively new city as it has only been around since 1958. The city was never actually expected to be as large as it has become, it was developed by the Rosen Brothers with the full intent of selling the properties to misleading people living out of state. By 1936 however the population had risen to 2,850 with 1,300 buildings either finished or under construction. The city itself has more canals than Venice, Italy, with over 160 miles worth!
To support the large population, Cape Coral boasts three public high schools, with a fourth on the way! Most ever major retailer resides in the city with more constantly popping up. Access to Southwest Florida Regional Airport is only 20 minutes away, and the Gulf of Mexico is closer by boat than driving in a car at 15 minutes!
Cape Coral truly is a paradise; it is not rare to see a dolphin or manatee in your backyard canal. It is sunny nearly everyday of the year. With weather and scenery like this, it is no wonder why Cape Coral is one of the fastest growing cities in the US. |
